Orion the Hunter

Orion was a skilled hunter. One day Orion was bragging to his friend, “I’m the best hunter in the world! I bet I could kill all the animals on earth! What do you think of that!” Gaia, the earth god, heard him and got angry. Gaia sent a giant scorpion to kill Orion. Orion was hunting in the forest with his dog, Sirus, when he ran into the scorpion. He started fighting the scorpion, but it was too strong. Orion ran away. Eventually he came to a river, he got in the river and stared swimming. The scorpion followed him on land, because scorpions can’t swim. The river emptied into the ocean, where Orion stayed, waiting for the scorpion to stop waiting for him at the shore. Sirus, seeing his master could not swim much longer, went to shore and fought the scorpion, but the scorpion killed him.

Apollo, the sun god, didn’t like Orion, because he had gotten mad at the sun for setting while he was hunting. Apollo was sitting with his sister, Artemis, who was friends with Orion, on a rock above the ocean when he saw Orion swim out.

“Look! There is a thief and a murderer in the ocean!” Apollo cried. “See that black spot?  Shoot it with your bow before it is too late!” Artemis shot the spot, but then went to find who it was. Seeing Orion she begged the gods to restore him to life. They would not. So Artemis put him and Sirus in the sky so they would never be forgotten.
