Homeschool Journal 9/11/17

Today we had dentist appointments almost all morning and orthodontist appointments in the afternoon. It was pretty hectic. I didn’t get much school done at all, but tomorrow I am doing Fridays work so I can easily just do it, I hope. Math will present a bit of a problem, two lessons in one day? That’s just torture! But so would having to do it on a weekend, and who knows if it would get done otherwise? Other than God of course.

We read about Palm Sunday and Jesus and the fig tree. Jesus cursed the fig tree. Cursing is wrong, right. Reed said that maybe He was using it as a lesson, but did He have to curse it? I think it must have been Him admonishing the tree.

Today we went on a field trip. We went to a church with a really cool playground with tubes and everything where we played with some little kids. Our moms talked while we played. It was pretty fun. I didn’t need to do spanish or science today. I didn’t finish all the work I had to do either.

Math was okish. I had to listen to him explain how to divide. It was not very good because I don’t have all of my multiplacation table memorized so I can’t do short division as easily.

In The BBC Manual we learned about meditation. In the real Bible we read about Bartimaus, the disciples rebuking the children coming to Jesus and the disciples arguing who was first among them. In both our history books we read about The Thirty Years’ War which lasted 41 years. It was really a lot of small chain reaction conflicts that came from a rebellion in Germany throwing two regents out the window. Most of today so far (it is 11 o’clock am) Mom and the girls went to meet Mom’s friend at a park in a church so I have been working here without any distractions. It was lucky I did not need any extra instruction from Mom in Algebra 1. Algebra 1 was about inside and outside compound inequalities. I finished the review of Module 2 in Science and it was easy. When we made the Friday schedule we made it for a Friday’s work so it was weird today to be taking notes on my Current Events instead of typing them. Also I would normally be done with my LA assignment but I was not because it was only the second day I’ve had it. Since Mom and the girls are still gone we have not done The Ghost of Tokaido Inn. We do not have poems today. Yesterday I finished North! Or Be Eaten and started The Emperor’s Code. I have not read any books outside of school today yet. After this I will have free time because I do not have my afternoon chores yet because it is not yet the afternoon.

Yesterday we started a new read aloud and it is sort of good but mostly I don’t think I will like it because the title has ghost in it. It is really scary and I totally will wish we aren’t reading this book soon. It was creepy.

Math was horrible and took forever. I got sent to my room until I could calm down. I was crying. Just let me get it wrong for once. I wish I could go back and not make all the typos ect, and not be so upset by the ones that I can’t get and then it is an obvious thing that I just forgot.

In English I am learning about character sketches. It is supposed to really develop your characters. It will really add depth to my writing if I can get the hang of it. But that’s only if I can get the hang of it. And if I practice it a lot. Well, this probably isn’t helping my writing. There are two many short sentences. I must stop having short sentences. Maybe if I use more commas? Or if I look through and see which things I really need to say. Ok, I am going to stop using as short sentences. If I can help it.

Today I got to school late but I am still finishing early. In Algebra 1 I learned about simplifying irrational numbers. In history we learned about the start of the empire of the Ottoman Turks. We finished learning about Character Bible Study in The BBC Manual. Most of the pages we read were printouts we didn’t really need to read and didn’t. In science I did half the review for Module 2 and some about cost/benefit of keeping to clean the air of pollutants in the US. Modules are two week sections of my science book. We have not done The Ghost of Tokaido Inn yet. We may also have poems. Yesterday I continued North! Or Be Eaten but have not read any books today outside of school. In the real Bible we read about Jesus driving out the demon that threw the boy into fires and water to burn and drown him. I made the Google doc and it looks confusing because most of the normal Friday things are on Tuesday and most of the normal Monday things are on Wednesday. After writing this I will need to do my morning chores because I skipped them to get to school today. I will also do The Ghost of Tokaido Inn at 2:30 and poems then if we have them. 2:30 is our time for Read-Aloud and this year poems. We read the last William Wordsworth poem in the book The Sun Has Long Been Set. It is now about 3 o’clock because we have now read The Ghost of Tokaido Inn and poems. In The Ghost of Tokaido Inn the ghost finally got introduced.

In Algebra 1 I finished early. It was about adding and subtracting irrational numbers. In Bible we read about Jesus feeding the 4,000 and in The BBC Manual we learned about more less common types of Bible Study and more about the common types. In History we learned about the world history of Persia. I did three days of science to catch up and did my experiment. It failed because I could not find a sunny enough place but I read the results I was supposed to get. In four days of Science I only got one experiment. It was lucky I got behind right then instead of later when I may have had many other experiments to do that were built on concepts from the one I was stuck waiting for a sunny day on. I started The Iron Peacock which is my reader and not The Ghost of Tokaido Inn like I thought. The Ghost of Tokaido Inn is our Read-Aloud like I thought The Iron Peacock was. We also started The Ghost of Tokaido Inn. I did not read at all today (in the past, now and in the future when I say this I mean outside of school). I am currently reading North! Or Be Eaten which is the second book of I need to make a Google docs sheet like I had last year to keep track of all my school with the days we did and will take off like Adi’s birthday, Labor Day and other holidays and trips. I will need to make one after writing this and fold some clothes.

In Bible we read about the less commonly told story of Jesus feeding a crowd. They had seven loafs of bread and picked up seven baskets after they fed the 400. The 400 hadn’t eaten for almost 3 days!!! That is one long sermon! We read about what to look for when you are doing different studies of the Bible so that you can get the most out of it.

Persia was conquered many times. It is amazing how many words we have for conquer, overthrown, invade, defeat, beat, vanquish, overcome, trounce, ect ect ect… It happens so much we need to have a million definitions for it that I haven’t even heard of half of them. It would be so hard to be a king or queen and not know who of your family is going to be treacherous and who you can trust, finding out you made the wrong decision later and regretting it or making the right one and feeling so betrayed. I am so glad I am not a queen!!!

We took yesterday off because it was Labor Day and we normally don’t do any school on days Dad has off of work. In Algebra 1 I finished early and started Current Events. In History we learned about the history of Angola and the African slave trade. In Bible Vella and I did not see that we were supposed to memorize two separate verses this week and we had both memorized the first and I had to memorize the second today. Mom is having me momentarily skip my experiment that needs a sunny day and work ahead in Science. I finished The King’s Fifth today. Tomorrow I will start The Ghost of Tokaido Inn. We also finished A Murder For Her Majesty.  Tomorrow we will start The Iron Peacock. I am writing this from tomorrow although we have not actually started those new books yet. Over the weekend I finished The Grave Robbers of Genghis Khan, The Wyrm King, How to Seize a Dragon’s Jewel, The Case of the Toxic Mutants and Knight-napped! and started North! Or Be Eaten. The Wyrm King is the third and final book of The Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles. How to Seize a Dragon’s Jewel is Book 10 in the How to Train your Dragon series. The Case of the Toxic Mutants and Knight-napped are Books 9 and 10 in Dragonbreath respectively. North! Or Be Eaten  is Book 2 in The Wingfeather Saga. I have not done all of my Science but it is easy. My science also proved that there is no significant global warming today. I will need to do the experiment in the late afternoon to get sunlight.

Yesterday was labor day and we took it off because dad got it off. We had some fun and got some stuff done too. We have taken several days off so far, so we are doing Fridays work today. Friday is our half-day, so it is not even lunch yet.

We read about Jesus spitting on a deaf and dumb mans tongue and ears. We also read the story of Jesus sending a demon out of a girl. But the one about the girl was not the common one about the slave-girl who’s master made money off of it, it was another one I don’t remember hearing before. I think it would be gross to have anyone other than Jesus spit in your ears.

Slave trade was a very common thing in the past. I was also horrible. They got them from Africa in two main ways. They took over territories and kidnapped, or they bought prisioners from warring tribes. We read about the trade triangle, that made almost all but the slaves who traveled it rich, and one queen who was raised and later fought during a over 60 year long war to keep her country from being overtaken.

I was “taught” how to multiply with more than two digits on the bottom row. It was incredibly boring. The problems were a little bit challenging though. But I got an A+ anyway.

In vocabulary I looked at a page in a book an tried to find any roots and see if I knew what they meant. It wasn’t too hard. Mostly because there were no roots on the page I chose. But I’m not going to complain about that, or getting to read a page of a book. Don’t worry, I chose a school book, and it was a page I had already read.

Homeschool Journal 9/1/17

I finished my Algebra 1 lesson in 32 minutes which is two minutes faster than yesterday. The lesson was about multiplying irrational numbers. In the real Bible we read about Jesus walking on water and feeding the five thousand. We read two chapters of But Don’t All Religions Lead to God? In history we learned about the start of tobacco growing in Virginia and the start of the slave trade in North America. We did not do A Murder For Her Majesty or poems yet. We were going to but then Adi, Mom and Vella went to Walmart to get Adi and Mom’s glasses. I still have to wait for a sunny time for science. It is 11 o’clock am now. Yesterday I continued reading The Grave Robbers of Genghis Khan. The Grave Robbers of Genghis Khan is the seventh and last book of The Children of the Lamp series. I have not read at all today. I did not finish my morning chores before school and will have to do them after writing this. Since it is Friday I have extra chores and since it is the first of the month I have even more extra chores. I have to clean the upstairs bathroom, clean the van and do laundry. We are getting together with some more friends today. Today we start a family diet with no grains, processed food or sugar. We will also follow all of our allergies. Pollen is coming back in the air and everyone with pollen allergies is congested.
